Telemedicine at NNH

What is Telemedicine?

Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication or two-way video systems (much like skype or facetime) to provide healthcare to patients when the physician is unable to be physically in the same room with the patient. These systems in the past required specialized equipment but now in our digital age requires only a computer, tablet or smart phone.

Is it secure?

The system we are using (Fruit Street and VSee (are fully HIPAA compliant). This is unlike regular video confeencing (like dkype or facetime). There is also an excellent document sharing system that also uses HIPAA compliant servers for storage of any personal health information that is uploaded (like blood pressure readings, images, lab documents, etc).

How does it work?

The process is is fairly simple. Once you are registered with our Telemedicine program (called Fruit Street) you open the Fruit Street program and request a telemedicine visit with Dr. Hurwitz. You can see us immediately (enter virtual waiting room) or you can schedule an appointment during an available time (even at night). Once your appointment time comes the doctor will log in and see that you are signed in and waiting. When the visit starts you will see him and he will see you via video conferencing. He will be able to show you your lab results and test results right on your own screen.

How much does it cost?

There is a cost to telemedicine visits just like regular visits in the office. Often this is just a copay and your insurance is billed for a telemedicine visit. Telemedicine visits are paid 'up front' using your credit card online. We also use telemedicine for some remote dialysis visits, which are included in the monthly dialysis fee and are not an extra charge.
