electronic records

In hopes of reducing medical errors and improving the safety and quality of healthcare delivery there has been a mjor push for the use of electronic health records. I'm a believer. In fact, when I first opened my practice I developed custom software to track the details of each of my patients. This custom solution was invaluable to me and allowed me to easily sort through details and coordinate the care of patients with complex disease. I used custom algorithms or rules engines to identify patients with subtle lab anormalities that may have been overlooked. This level of tracking is not possible with paper charts. I continue to work on systems to improve the care of patients with all levels of kidney disease.

Currently my office is using Centricity by GE Healthcare. I've been extremely pleased with this system and how it has helped me to optimize my practice. I can submit prescriptions electronically to most pharmacies including mail-order. I've converted most of my algorithms from my prior system to work in the new program. Most labs and studies such as x-rays or scans are also directly transmitted into the system allowing for less delay in reviewing results and reduced errors due to manual data entry. I'm looking forward to the patient portal that will allow paients to log in to the system and review results as well as communicate with me. I will keep you up to date on changes. We pride ourselves on our privacy practices, which we monitor closely to be sure your health information is secure.
